Yes - whenever you install a Primary or a Secondary site
you need an SMS server license. Component servers such as CAPs, DPs, and
Software Metering servers, DON'T require separate licenses and can be installed
on any server running a licensed copy of NT/ Windows 2000.
Component servers such as CAPs, DPs, Software Metering
servers WILL require a separate SMS Client Access License (CAL) if they are
installed as or run any of the SMS Client components.
CALs are also required for any computer/device (including
servers), that are installed as or run any of the SMS Client components. In
addition a CAL is required for any clients that run packages created with SMS
Installer.
A CAL is not required for server-to-server communications.
What is not clear from this is whether you need a separate
CAL on Primary and Secondary servers as the client is automatically installed as
part of the SMS Site Server installation.
