Do I Need an SMS License for my Secondary Site Server?

Contributed By: Cliff Hobbs [MVP SMS]
Yes - whenever you install a Primary or a Secondary site you need an SMS server license. Component servers such as CAPs, DPs, and Software Metering servers, DON'T require separate licenses and can be installed on any server running a licensed copy of NT/ Windows 2000.

Component servers such as CAPs, DPs, Software Metering servers WILL require a separate SMS Client Access License (CAL) if they are installed as or run any of the SMS Client components.

CALs are also required for any computer/device (including servers), that are installed as or run any of the SMS Client components. In addition a CAL is required for any clients that run packages created with SMS Installer.

A CAL is not required for server-to-server communications.

What is not clear from this is whether you need a separate CAL on Primary and Secondary servers as the client is automatically installed as part of the SMS Site Server installation.

The above information was obtained from http://www.microsoft.com/smsmgmt/exec/faq.asp and from information extracted from the End-User License Agreement included in the root of the SMS CD. The above information is the author's interpretation of this information. If you are at all unsure as to your licensing requirements please contact Microsoft.

Should anyone from Microsoft viewing this information care to clarify the above, the author will gladly publish any errors or omissions here.

Why does SMSLS.BAT copy files such as SLWNT16 to the NETLOGON share?

Why do the following files get copied to the 'NETLOGON' share in addition to 'SMSLS.BAT' (which I would expect to get copied there):

SLWNT16
SLWNT32
SLWNT32A
SMSBOOT1
SNBOOT

I would have thought these would have got copied to just the 'SMSLOGON' share and then SMS takes care of the replication rather than relying on NT?

Contributed By: Rod Trent
SMSLS.bat is written so those files have to be in the same directory that the batch file is initiated from.

Why isn't my Secondary Site generating any log files?

Contributed By: Cliff Hobbs [MVP SMS]
If you're wondering why no log files are being generated on your Secondary Site(s) it's because by default logging isn't enabled. To enable logging for a Secondary you need to enable it using the SMS Service Manager utility available through the Admin console on the Secondary's Parent Primary.
