Can I Customise the Status Message Viewer?

Contributed By: Cliff Hobbs [MVP SMS]
Yes you can. From the 'View' menu select 'Options'. From here you can set such things as the default font, auto-refresh options (to save you having to refresh the query), which columns to display, and whether to export just the current message or all messages. You can also display the box by clicking in the drop down list at the top of the screen and pressing 'CTRL+C'.

Offer Status Summarizer reports an invalid message ID 669

I got a lot of the messages below and I don't now what the cause is. Digging into TechNet brought me no relief as the message below has an ID of 3812 and all that I could found ended at ID 3811. Anyone have any ideas?

"SMS Offer Status Summarizer cannot process a status message because it has an invalid message ID 669. The message ID must be within the range 10000 to 10099. As a result, the Advertisement Status summary data in the SMS Administrator console may be inaccurate.

The message was reported by component "Available Programs Manager (APM)" on computer "XXXX" at site XX1 on 23.11.2000 08:59:53. Please refer to the Microsoft Knowledge Base for more information".

I had this error, and had the following reply from Microsoft:

"Typically de-installing and reinstalling the client will clear this up, provided that all components install without a problem. You might also want to examine your "Offersum.Log" file for clues to the problem."

In our case, the server (which was an SMS client that was causing the problem), had been upgraded from SMS 1.2 to SMS2 SP2 but had not been re-booted. A re-boot fixed the problem.

Sender failed to send files to destination site <sitecode>

Installing a Secondary site gives the following error message in the Status Message Viewer:

"Sender failed to send files to destination site <sitecode>.  Make sure the address account has Administrator privileges to site server  "\server_name\installation_drive\" and that site server "\server_name\installation_drive\" has sufficient free disk space on the SMS installation drive."

Check the permissions are setup correctly for the installation drive (which needed to be amended in this particular case).

SMS LAN Sender cannot connect to remote site "<site_code>" over the LAN

When trying to install a Secondary site the above message is displayed with an 'Error 5: Access is denied' under 'Parent Site | Component Status | SMS LAN Sender.'

The installation was being performed on an NT Member Server. The Master Account Domain 'Domain Administrators' group wasn't a member of the 'Local Administrators' group on the Member server. Adding this group in and re-installing the site cured the problem.

SMS System Messages in your mailbox (as it's Xmas)

Do you want to get rid of those SMS pop-up messages on your server console? You can change your Status Filter using a program 'mailto.exe' and have them sent to your mailbox.

This is the syntax that needs to be entered in the status filter rules, stating 'Send Message......' (actually, the only thing I changed is the bold text):

"C:\WINNT\System32\mailto.exe -h mail_server_address -D mailbox_name -S "CRITICAL: SMS Component %msgis1 on %msgis2" -M "On %msgltm/%msgltd/%msglty at %msgltI:%msgltM:%msgltS %msgltp, Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) detected that the component %msgis01 running on server %msgis02 may be experiencing a problem. SMS set the status of this component to Critical; SMS is configured to alert you when this occurs. For more information, start Programs --> Systems Management Server --> SMS Administrator Console. Navigate to the Site Database (Site %sc) --> System Status --> Site Status --> %msgsc --> Component Status folder. Right-click on %msgis01 on site system %msgis02, select Show Messages, and choose All to start the SMS Status Message Viewer. Search the list of status messages for Message ID 4609."

Of course the escape sequences ("
ex. %msgis01") may differ for each status rule, but it's peace of cake. By using different subjects, you can add different mailbox rules, so that all these messages do not show up in your Inbox.

Copy the Mailto.exe and Mailto.txt files to "C:\winnt\system32" on your Primary Site server.

Status Message Viewer 'Description' text appears as a Black Box

When I highlight the 'Description' text in the SMS Status Viewer, instead of a box appearing containing the all of the text for the message in question, all I get is a large black box.

Contributed By: Cliff Hobbs [MVP SMS]
This is caused by you not having a colour 'Scheme' set on the machine in question.  Goto 'Control Panel | Display' and from the 'Appearance' tab select the 'Scheme:' option. Choose an option such as 'Windows Standard' then click 'OK'.  The Status Message text will then be displayed properly.

Where can I find a list of the SMS System Status Messages and their meaning?

Chapter 26 Status Messages (under "Part 8: Troubleshooting") of the BackOffice Resource Kit 4.5 includes tables that list the status messages reported by SMS 2.0. An explanation is given of the format of status messages and then the messages themselves are grouped together by the following topics:

  • Client Messages
  • Server Messages
  • SMS Provider Messages
  • Software Metering Messages

This chapter builds on knowledge that is assumed from Chapter 20 of the Administrators Guide ("Understanding the SMS Status System").
