The Component
Status folder in the SMS admin console (I am using the MMC for all of the
servers in my organisation) for the Secondary Site servers is displaying the
state of components being stopped. But when I right click on the component
and select 'All
Tasks | SMS Service Manager'
and query individual components, surprisingly the status is displayed as
running!!!
Did anybody come across this kind of problem? I can use Service Manager to
check the status of components, but its a time consuming process.

The Component Status folder node is based on status messages, and those
require that various components are functional. I like the Status system,
but if the Site Status hasn't been updated recently then it's necessary to
refer to other sources. I'm not sure of the mechanics of the Service
Manager, but I find it a little slow to check for problems, a little
unreliable, and there's no way to dig deeper for the underlying details. So
if the Status system suggests a problem, or it's ambiguous, then it's time
to refer to the logs. Logging isn't enabled by default, but when you first
set up an SMS site it's a good idea to enable them. The Service Manager is
an easy (and the documented) way to turn them on.
If the logs are being updated frequently, then you can be confident that the
components are working. By reading the logs you can start to discern whether
they're working properly (they aren't the easiest things to read).
To summarize, start with the Status System, but rely on the logs.
