SCCM 1802 automated installation of new site fails with error a required parameter is missing

Why does an SCCM 1802 automated installation of new site fails with error a required parameter is missing? I have also tried running a silent install from a command-line but this fails with the same error.

ANSWER

This is because from SCCM 1802 the Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP) feature has been removed from the product.

However, the setup process has not been modified. So the end result is if you try to automate the installation of a new SCCM site either from an unattended script or a command-line you will see the error.

I am trying to upgrade from SCCM 2012 R2 to ConfigMgr 1511 but the upgrade is failing.

If I look in C:\ConfigMgrSetup.log I see the following error:

ERROR: Failed to copy <drive>:\SMSSETUP\tools\CMTrace.exe to <drive>:\program files\microsoft system center 2012 r2\configuration manager\tools\cmtrace.exe, Win32 error = 5

ANSWER

This is because the upgrade process is trying to copy a new version of CMTrace to the ConfigMgr installation directory which it can’t as you’ve got the CMTrace open.
