When I try to install the ConfigMgr/SCCM Administrator Console the installation passes the prerequisite checks but then fails at the “Transfer files” step with a “Fatal Error” dialog box that states:

Configuration Manager Setup cannot continue because of the following error:

Setup has encountered fatal errors while performing file operations”

My only option is to click “OK” which kills the installation process.

When I try to connect to a different Site Server from within the Administrator Console I get a “Database Connection Wizard” error dialog box which states:

The Site Server cannot be contacted or trying to connect to an incompatible Site Server version. Please enter a new Site Server Name.

If I click the “Details >>” button the dialog states:
The RPC server is unavailable. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800706BA)

What I’m confused about is what are all these log files that are named like Package hashes?

I’ve looked at a few at random and most of them just contain the single line:

Updating UI on timer

others contain lines like:

Help topic not found in ‘HelpTopicLinks.xml’ for topic ID: ‘7b06d39c-1f30-4fee-ab34-8516219f05f2’

I only stumbled across this by accident as I was troubleshooting a Task Sequence Media issue and dropped into here to look in the CreateTSMedia.log.

I’ve tried doing an In-Place upgrade of SMS 2003 to ConfigMgr but it gets part way through the process then displays a Fatal Error dialog box stating:

Configuration Manager Setup cannot continue because of the following error: Setup cannot upgrade the 
ConfigMgr database. Contact your SQL administrator.

If I look in the ConfigMgrSetup.log it states:

***SqlError: [42000][2812][Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Could not find stored procedure
‘master..xp_SMS_notification’. : SMSDBMON_SiteControl_ins
Cannot insert the default site control image to the database.

Cannot initialize the sites table in the database.
