I'm trying to upgrade SMS to SP2. The installation gets as far as 'Installing Windows Management Components' then it just hangs. After a few minutes the SMSService account gets locked out. The only log file that looks like it’s related is the WBEMCORE.LOG which contains the following lines:

(Fri Apr 18 22:30:43 2003) : Error 80041001 occured executing queued request
(Fri Apr 18 22:31:03 2003) : Provider ExtnProv returned failure from call to initialize, error code 0x80041001
(Fri Apr 18 22:31:03 2003) : Class provider 'ExtnProv' installed in namespace 'root\SMS\site_ABC' failed to enumerate classes, returning error code 0x80041013. Operations will continue as if the class provider had no classes. This provider-specific error condition needs to be corrected before this class provider can contribute to this namespace.

It looks like WBEM could be screwed on the server you're trying to upgrade. The first thing to try would be to try re-installing WBEM. Rod Trent has a great article on myITforum.com that explains how to do this:

Reinstalling WBEM

It turns out that in this case reinstalling WBEM cured the problem.
