If you’ve ever started a Remote Tools session and wondered what all of the buttons are at the top of the screen then let us explain.

Once you’ve established a Remote Tools connection to the machine in question a window is displayed that contains the following icons on the toolbar:

Clicking this button will start a Remote Control session on the machine

Clicking this button will reboot the machine.  You may be required to confirm the reboot request before the machine is rebooted if Remote Tools has been configured this way.

Clicking this button establishes a Chat session with the machine.  A split screen is displayed which allows you to have a conversation with someone logged in and sitting in front of the machine in question.

Clicking this button loads the File Transfer agent.  This displays a split screen that allows files or directories to be accessed and managed on both the local system and the remote machine.  Using this facility you could for example copy a ‘good’ copy of an 'AUTOEXEC.BAT' file onto a user’s machine where their local file has been tinkered with.

This button allows you to run a program on the remote machine without actually being logged onto the machine in question.  All you need to do is enter the full path for example typing C:\WINNT\system32\calc.exe will load Windows Calculator on the remote machine.

Clicking this button tests connectivity between the local machine and the remote machine by doing a sort of ping

Once you’ve started a Remote Control session (by clicking on the  button from the Remote Tools window), a new window appears of the remote machine’s desktop with a moving yellow and black border.  This new window has the following icons:

*

Clicking this button activates the remote machine’s “Start” menu

Clicking this button sends the 'ALT+TAB' key sequence to allow you to switch between active applications running on the remote machine

Clicking this button sends the 'CTRL+ALT+DEL' key sequence to the remote machine.  Use this button to both login and logoff of the remote machine.  DON’T be tempted to use the Start Menu to logoff of the machine as it might not work correctly and still leave you logged into the remote machine.

*

Clicking this button allows you to send ALT key sequences to the remote machine such as 'ALT+F4' to close a window.  This button is a toggle - clicking it once enables this feature – the red dot on this button changes to green and a brief message “System Key Pass-Through: On” is displayed; clicking the button again changes the dot back to red and the message “System Key Pass-Through: Off” is briefly displayed on the screen.

*

Clicking this button displays a thumb nail of the screen.  Clicking an area within the thumbnail changes the active viewing area to the area you clicked.  This saves using the scroll bars to move around the screen.

And that’s all there is to it.
