Error: "_com_error Exception in MMC Admin UI!" When Connecting from an XP Machine

I installed and configured SMS 2.0 to the latest update SP4. It's working fine on Windows 2000 Server systems as a Parent site connecting to SQL 2000. However, when I installed the MMC admin console on my XP Pro workstation to manage SMS, I got these error messages:

An error occurred during your last operation. Please shutdown the Systems Management Server Administrator's Console and restart it.
For debugging information, press the More Information button.

Clicking on the "More Information" button displays a screen that says:

Make sure you install the Admin console from the SMS SP4 CD and NOT the original SMS CD otherwise your machine won't connect to the site correctly. Looking at the errors these are typical if the version of the Administrator console is not the correct one.

You may also see this error if you run the Admin console on a Windows XP SP1 system and right click on the site to check 'About Systems Management Server', even though the console was installed from the SP4 CD (it doesn't happen on Windows 2000 machines). This is a bug that Microsoft are aware of.
