Client Installs to C:\winnt\temp\ms then Fails

I am trying to install the SMS 2.0 client on a member server. Every time I try to install it it’s installed to C:\winnt\temp\ms. The install then fails and I try again.

Can anybody give me an idea as to why this might be happening?

From the description, it sounds like you may be attempting a remote client install or may be logged in on the member server without admin rights.

Either way could get you into this situation.

When the client install runs it first copies components into the temp folder. Then, it attempts to move them into the WINNT folder. If you don't have sufficient rights to do so (such as a low rights user), the client install will pause and create a CCR (client configuration request) and send it to the site server to request help. The site server then connects to the client and finishes the install under the context of the SMS Service account.

So, you could be failing at a couple of points - creating and submitting the CCR (check the client logs - WN_logon or WN_manual) or the site server may be having difficulty connecting back to the client - check the CCM.LOG on the site server (logging needs to be on to see this log).
