"The domain "domain_name" is not an Active Directory domain…"

I’ve installed Windows 2000 Server and setup a new Forest and Domain called FAQShop.com. I’ve configured DNS and everything works fine. I’m now trying to add a Child domain called 'info.FAQShop.com'.

I’ve installed a new server and I’m trying to run the '
Configure Your Server' wizard to install Active Directory. I start the wizard and click 'Next >', 'Next >' on the next screen to accept the default 'Domain controller for a new domain', select the 'Create a new child domain in an existing domain tree' option on the next screen then click 'Next >' at which point I’m prompted for some credentials and the domain name of the parent name.

I enter the details and click '
Next >' but after a short delay I get the following error:

Active Directory Installation Wizard
The domain “domain_name” is not an Active Directory domain, or an Active Directory domain controller for the domain could not be contacted.

Name resolution is working as I can ping the Parent Domain Controller by name and IP address.

  1. Right-click on 'My Network Places' and double click on the 'Local Area Connection'.

  2. Click on the 'Properties' button.

  3. Select 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)' then click on the 'Properties' button.

  4. Enter the IP address of the Parent DC that is running DNS in the 'Preferred DNS server' box then click on 'OK'.

  5. Close any other open dialog boxes and restart the 'Configure Your Server' wizard to re-install AD which should now work.
