A fired Intel Corp. employee did not trespass on his former company's e-mail servers when he inundated company employees with electronic complaints, the California Supreme Court ruled Monday in a case that tested the bounds of free speech in cyberspace.

Oracle gives PeopleSoft window to seal J.D. Edwards deal

Oracle on Tuesday agreed to postpone a court hearing in its $6.3 billion hostile bid for PeopleSoft, removing a major potential barrier to PeopleSoft's planned friendly acquisition of J.D. Edwards, a smaller Denver-based software rival. Oracle said by mutual agreement with PeopleSoft and other parties, a July 16 hearing in Delaware Chancery Court will be put off indefinitely.

Microsoft trumps Linux for Euro contracts

Microsoft announced a trio of European government contract wins on Tuesday, the latest salvo in the growing turf battle between the software giant and sellers of the upstart Linux software. The Redmond, Wash., software giant would not disclose financial terms of the deals, which it said it won after competing head-to-head for the business with various Linux companies.

By raising national security concerns, software maker SCO's suit against IBM hamstrings the open-source movement. The $1 billion lawsuit that SCO Group (SCOX ) Inc. filed against IBM in March is turning into something akin to water torture. Every few weeks, there's a new allegation or announcement from the tiny Lindon (Utah) software company, provoking fears that it will enforce its intellectual property rights against sellers of the Linux computer operating system.

Microsoft fixes another flaw in Passport

Microsoft Corp. said Tuesday it has fixed another security flaw in its popular Internet Passport service, which could have allowed hackers to hijack some older accounts. Microsoft senior manager Jeff Jones said he believes no Passport accounts were stolen. Jones declined to say how many people were at risk but said the flaw affected only a small number of users who had created their accounts more than four years ago. As part of its repair efforts late Monday, Microsoft briefly prevented some Passport users from manually changing their passwords.

It is immediately available in the US through Toshiba America's website.

File-sharers plead for legitimacy

The Electronic Frontier Foundation has launched an advertising campaign demanding changes in copyright law to legalize file sharing. The "Let the Music Play" campaign is intended to encourage the six million users of file-sharing software in the US to make their voices heard in government, as a counterweight to increasingly vehement condemnation of peer-to-peer file sharing networks by the entertainment industry.

Users face dilemma as Microsoft ends support for Windows NT 4.0 Workstation

Corporate users needing assistance with the seven-year-old software will now have to rely on the company's self-help online option or contract with an outside company. Microsoft ended "mainstream support" for Windows NT 4.0 Workstation a year ago. Mainstream support included no-charge incident support, support for warranty claims, "hot fix" support, paid incident support and support charged on an hourly basis.

Microsoft launches digital ID software

Microsoft on Wednesday announced new software designed to automate the process of managing user authentication on corporate networks. The company said that Microsoft Identity Integration Server (MIIS) 2003, which will be available to customers next month, will help businesses establish, manage and eventually delete user account information more easily.
