I am looking to backup my Site Servers but I'm confused why I can't just use the same backup software I use for the rest of my backups and/ or SQL itself to perform the backup of my Site Servers.  Why do I have to use the Backup ConfigMgr Site Server Maintenance Task?

It is true that you could in theory use either your backup software or SQL Server itself to backup your Site Servers database. BUT, what you need to remember is that the Backup ConfigMgr Site Server Maintenance Task is the only supported method to both restore your Site and that is compataible with the Site Repair Wizard.

If you backup your Site Server with a different method and encounter a Disaster Recovery (DR), situation where you need to use the Site Repair Wizard chances are it won't recognise your backup.

Also bear in mind that this Task doesn't just simply backup the Site Server Database.  It also backs up Registry keys, files and other Site configuration data that these other methods won't capture and that could be critical when recovering from a DR situation.
