“SQL Server service running account” SCCM Prerequisite Check “Failed”

I am trying to install a new ConfigMgr Site Server but the SQL Server service running account prerequisite check has failed with the following error:

The logon account for the SQL Server service cannot be a local user account, NT SERVICE\<sql service name> or LOCAL SERVICE. You must configure the SQL Server service to use a valid domain account, NETWORK SERVICE, or LOCAL SYSTEM

If I look in the ConfigMgrPrereq.log I see the following entry:

SQL Server service running account; Error; The logon account for the SQL Server service cannot be a local user account, NT SERVICE\<sql service name> or LOCAL SERVICE. You must configure the SQL Server service to use a valid domain account, NETWORK SERVICE, or LOCAL SYSTEM.
